Did you know that small businesses represent almost 99 percent of all employers in the state of Florida? Although there are more than two million small businesses located throughout the state, there is always room for one more.

There are many benefits of starting a small business in the Sunshine State. In addition to what this means to your professional career, you are also in position to do some good for the state's economy.

The Florida Department of State Division of Library and Information Services provides a variety of resources for entrepreneurs interested in starting a business. SurePayroll also provides some key information about Florida payroll.

The steps you take to start a business will be nearly identical to anybody else who is doing the same. The Florida Department of State makes note of six details that require your attention:

  • Tax information
  • Business registration
  • Selecting a location
  • Tax registration
  • International trade information
  • Permitting and land use

Most of these details will pertain to you, but some of them will not. For example, not every new business needs to select a location. Some people will set up shop in their home, avoiding the time and cost associated with finding and renting office space.

The IRS also provides an overview of starting a business. From selecting a business structure to applying for an Employer Identification Number (EIN), there are many tax related details to take care of before your business opens its doors.

While there is a lot to think about as you get started, the basics can be broken down into three steps:

  • Decide on a name for your company.
  • Select the appropriate business structure: sole proprietorship, partnership, LLC, or corporation.
  • Register your company with the state and county, while also obtaining a federal EIN.

Starting a business in Florida will take time and research. Once the startup process is in the past, it is time to look toward the future.
